Nevertheless, consideration of the hamster model would seem to be of interest, in view of the fact that the oral administration of 3-methylcholanthrene to this species resulted in the induction of mammary gland carcinomas after short periods of time. In certain aspects, this is a more striking occurrence than in the rat, since spontaneous mammary tumours are exceedingly rare in the hamster, and since in this animal prolonged stimulation with synthetic estrogens did not result in the development of tumours of the breast. Аннотация: Since the first historic production of tumours of the rabbit skin by Yamagiva & Ishikawa (1918), cancer research workers have extended the study of cutaneous carcinogenesis to a number of other animal species. Cutaneous carcinogenesis has many attractions, perhaps the most important being the fact that the skin provides an opportunity for easy, continuous and accurate observation of its lesions as does no other organ, and that tumours can be raised here not only by a large variety of chemicals but also by various physical and biological agents. Of the animal species recently added to the list of those used for cutaneous carcinogenesis, the hamster stands out as undoubtedly the most important. At least three points set the hamster apart from other species: (1) it has a costovertebral spot in which tumours can be raised by hormonal means; (2) it has small pigmented spots in the skin (comprising networks of melanocytes around some of the hair follicles), from which melanotic tumours can be readily produced; and (3) it has a cheek pouch, which can be exteriorized and used as a glabrous area for carcinogenesis, so that one may compare tumours arising from hairy and non-hairy epithelia. In common with the skin of many laboratory rodents, hamster skin also yields a crop of epithelial and mesenchymal tumours of various types. These include keratoacanthomas, papillomas, squamous cell carcinomas, sebaceous adenomas, basal cell tumours, dermatofibromas and dermatofibrosarcomas. The commonest of the epithelial tumours produced in the skin by chemical carcinogenesis bears a close morphological and behavioural resemblance to the keratoacanthoma of man. Studies of these tumours in rabbit, mouse, hamster, rat, hedgehog, chicken and man have shown that these tumours arise from the hair follicles. The skin with its appendages is a complex dynamic organ, which produces a bewildering variety of tumours. If the histogenesis and behaviour of these tumours is to be understood, one must first recall certain relevant points regarding the biology and morphology of the hair follicles, the small pigmented spots and the costovertebral spots. Аннотация: The term `soft tissue' is used here to refer to any of the generalized supporting mesenchymal tissues and includes the following: fibrous, adipose, peripheral, neural, vascular and muscular tissue. The skeletal, central nervous system, lymphoid, synovial and haematological tissues are covered elsewhere. The tumours arise not only in the muscular and subcutaneous tissues, but also in most of the visceral organs where supporting tissue is present. As in the preceding review, the latter types of tumour are only briefly mentioned, since many of them are discussed in the chapters dealing with those visceral organ systems. These tumours are of particular interest due to the unique susceptibility of the hamster to viral oncogenesis. Virtually all major varieties of known oncogenic viruses are tumorigenic in the hamster, and they induce some unique lesions that are not known in any other species. Since most of these tumours are soft-tissue lesions, the hamster provide a singular yardstick for morphological and biological comparison. Библ. 160

Аннотация: Tumours of the haematopoietic system are an important group of tumours in the hamster. Tumours of lymphoreticular origin are among the most common spontaneous tumours in aged hamsters and appear to be the most frequent malignant neoplasm. Lymphoreticular tumours have also been induced experimentally by a number of means, including X-irradiation, chemical carcinogens, viruses and tissue extracts. Their relatively high rate of occurrence in untreated hamsters has often obscured the significance of their induction by experimental means. These tumours often contain a number of virus-like particles of unknown biological significance. A virus of clear significance is hamster papovavirus, which can cause epizootics or enzootics of transmissible lymphoma. It has confounded a number of hamster experiments, including ones investigating its own pathogenesis. Библ. 94

Аннотация: In the area chemical carcinogenesis of the genital system, relatively few agents have been tested in the hamster, and only four have produced a significant yield of tumours. Spontaneous neoplasmas of the reproductive tract of the female hamster are uncommon, although among different colonies the incidence may range from 3.5 to 11% and the pre-dilection site may also vary. When a large number of untreated and estrogen-treated female hamsters in the Stanford colony were compared, the incidence of ovarian tumours in untreated animals was 0.12% as opposed to 0.28% for estrogen-treated ones, while the corresponding figures for uterine tumours were 0.22% and 1.40%. The low incidence of spontaneous genital tumours, coupled with the range of preneoplastic and neoplastic conditions that can be induced by some chemical carcinogens, makes the hamster a potentially valuable biological system for studying etiology and pathogenesis, hormone-dependence, autonomous growth, morphology, biological behaviour and treatment of induced tumours of the female reproductive tract. In addition to reviewing the literature since 1965, this chapter includes comparisons, where possible, of the different tumours of the female reproductive tract of the hamster with their human counterparts. However, the WHO classification of human ovarian and genital tract tumours is complex due to the large numbers of different tumours arising from these organs. In contrast, relatively few spontaneous tumours arise from the genital tract of female hamsters, making a direct comparison between human and hamster neoplasms of limited value. Earlier literature on hamster tumours has been reviewed by various authors. Additional reviews on hormone-induced tumours of the reproductive tract of the female hamster and its transplantable tumours are also available. Библ. 140

Аннотация: Despite extensive study of the hamster, spontaneous tumours of the testis and accessory sex glands have rarely been reported. In part, this may be due to the fact that in the laboratory hamster, as in other mammalian species, the incidence of neoplasia increases with advancing age but the life of an experimental animal is shortened by design. It may also reflect a lack of thoroughness in some pathological studies, particularly since many tumours cannot be detected grossly; some workers have attributed higher tumour incidences in their studies to the intensive histological examination of step sections in multiple organs. This review provides an update of the review by Kirkman and Kempson in the first edition of this volume. It also compares the hamster tumours, when possible, to their human counterparts, according to classifications based on the WHO Histological Typing of Testis Tumours and of Prostate Tumours. It should be noted that the literature in this area is fragmentary and widely scattered, and it is occasionally anecdotal or buried in technical reports which are not usually included in standard bibliographic data-bases. Аннотация: The Syrian golden hamster (Cricetus auratus) has not been used extensively for studies of experimental induction of bone tumours. Therefore, in comparison with other laboratory rodents, less is known of the development, anatomy and spontaneous diseases of its skeleton. However, this species provides a suitable model for comparative studies, of not only skeletal but also odontogenic diseases, because some spontaneous and induced lesions of the bone, supporting tissues and dental structures resemble morphologically those occurring in humans. The etiology of bone tumours (including dental neoplasms) in humans is unknown and a practical experimental model could provide information about the factors involved in the pathogenesis of skeletal and dental neoplasms. Аннотация: Advances in viral and chemical carcinogenesis have led to the development of new experimental approaches, resulting in the induction of a wide range of tumours of the nervous system. The intracerebral injection of oncogenic viruses into newborn animals and the transplacental administration of resorptive chemical carcinogens capable of crossing both the placental and haematoencephalic barriers resulted in the induction of the first types of neurogenic tumours in hamsters. The considerable variety of tumours of nervous origin that have since been produced in the hamster, in contrast to the almost complete absence of spontaneous tumours, makes this animal species a useful biological system for studying the etiology, pathogenesis, morphology, biological behaviour and treatment of tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system. This is of interest since primary tumours of the central nervous system account for approximately 9% of all primary neoplasms in humans. Since the first edition of this review was compiled the following new types of tumours of the nervous system have been experimentally induced in the hamster and are therefore described below: pinealocytoma, gliomatosis cerebri, medullo-epithelioma, ependymoblastoma, primitive polar spongioblastoma, neuroblastoma (central and peripheral), ganglioneuroblastoma, plexiform neurofibroma, esthesioneuroblastoma and retinoblastoma. Аннотация: The liver of the hamster demonstrates a wide range of morphological and biochemical alterations in response to chemical and physical insult. Some are clearly the result of acute toxicity of chemical agents or in some cases physical damage, while others are unequivocally members of the classes of tumours and their pre-stages which can arise in this organ. There are morphological entities, however, which are less easy to categorize, such as proliferative changes involving hepatocytes and ductular cells which require particular diagnostic care. Аннотация: There are very few reports on the experimental induction of tumours of the mammary gland in the hamster. Nevertheless, consideration of the hamster model would seem to be of interest, in view of the fact that the oral administration of 3-methylcholanthrene to this species resulted in the induction of mammary gland carcinomas after short periods of time. In certain aspects, this is a more striking occurrence than in the rat, since spontaneous mammary tumours are exceedingly rare in the hamster, and since in this animal prolonged stimulation with synthetic estrogens did not result in the development of tumours of the breast. Аннотация: Since the first historic production of tumours of the rabbit skin by Yamagiva & Ishikawa (1918), cancer research workers have extended the study of cutaneous carcinogenesis to a number of other animal species. Cutaneous carcinogenesis has many attractions, perhaps the most important being the fact that the skin provides an opportunity for easy, continuous and accurate observation of its lesions as does no other organ, and that tumours can be raised here not only by a large variety of chemicals but also by various physical and biological agents. Of the animal species recently added to the list of those used for cutaneous carcinogenesis, the hamster stands out as undoubtedly the most important. At least three points set the hamster apart from other species: (1) it has a costovertebral spot in which tumours can be raised by hormonal means; (2) it has small pigmented spots in the skin (comprising networks of melanocytes around some of the hair follicles), from which melanotic tumours can be readily produced; and (3) it has a cheek pouch, which can be exteriorized and used as a glabrous area for carcinogenesis, so that one may compare tumours arising from hairy and non-hairy epithelia. In common with the skin of many laboratory rodents, hamster skin also yields a crop of epithelial and mesenchymal tumours of various types. These include keratoacanthomas, papillomas, squamous cell carcinomas, sebaceous adenomas, basal cell tumours, dermatofibromas and dermatofibrosarcomas. The commonest of the epithelial tumours produced in the skin by chemical carcinogenesis bears a close morphological and behavioural resemblance to the keratoacanthoma of man. Studies of these tumours in rabbit, mouse, hamster, rat, hedgehog, chicken and man have shown that these tumours arise from the hair follicles. The skin with its appendages is a complex dynamic organ, which produces a bewildering variety of tumours. If the histogenesis and behaviour of these tumours is to be understood, one must first recall certain relevant points regarding the biology and morphology of the hair follicles, the small pigmented spots and the costovertebral spots. Т. обр. описан уникальных способ возможности отслеживания в живых клетках ранних стадий ЗКС. Подчеркивают, что окрашивание аннексина V флуоресцентными соединениями происходит быстро, этот процесс обратим и минимально разрушает клетки
