Class performance and retention as a function of participation in class activities in a large introductory psychology course [Text] : abstr. Pap. Present. Annu. Meet. Mich. Acad. Перевод заглавия: Успеваемость и посещаемость как функция вовлеченности в учебную деятельность в ходе обучения курсу "Введение в психологию"
Аннотация: A teaching assistant program and an extra credit system were implemented in a class of 136 Introductory psychology students to increase performance and retention rates. Like previous semesters, the teaching assistants (TA's) kept regular office hours to assist students with study skills and to review class materials. This semester, however, more TA's were recruited and encouragement to participate in course activities (submitting extra credit, visiting TA's, and attending class) was intensified by both the professor and the TA's. Number and type of visits to TA's, class attendance, participation in extra credit, and test performance were recorded for each student. These data were then compared to baseline data from previous semesters. Our hypothesis was that test grades for those students who participated in class activities would rise relative to their initial exams. We also predicted that general performance and retention rate for the class would increase compared to previous semesters. At mid-semester, the data indicate increased attendance and an 11% increase in number of students visiting TA's compared to the end of last semester. Also, student participation in extra credit is at 89% higher than any previous semester. Test performance of students visiting the TA's is 8% higher than those who do not visit. These findings support the hypothesis that participation in class activities increases performance in a large lecture class.
