    Craigie, M.

    Recalling faces from names [Text] : abstr. Pap. Psychol. Postgraduate Affairs Group: Annu. Conf., Sheffield, 7-8 July, 1994 / M. Craigie, J. R. Hanley // Proc. Brit. Psychol. Soc. - 1995. - Vol. 3, N 1. - P24 . - ISSN 1350-472X
Craigie and Hanley (1993) provide evidence that suggests correctly imaging the face of a famous person from a written name can only occur after identity-specific semantic information has been correctly accessed. An experiment is reported in which leamed associations (between unfamiliar faces, occupations and unfamiliar names) were tested using a recognition paradigm (c.f. McWeeny et al., 1987). The results broadly support a hierarchical model of memory for people (e. g. Bruce & Young, 1986; Craigie & Hanley, 1993; Valentine et al., 1991). Issues related to a fragmentation theory of episodic memory (Jones, 1976; 1978a,b) are also discussed

    I recognize your face but I can't remember your name: Is it because names are unique ? [Text] / Daryl M. Harris, Janice Kay // Brit. J. Psychol. - 1995. - Vol. 86, N 3. - P345-358 . - ISSN 0007-1269
Burron & Bruce (1992), and Cohen (1990a), offer alternative accounts of the differences in `normal' and neurologically impaired subjects' abilities to recall people's names and other pieces of biographical information. Cohen claims that the principal difference between names and other biographical information is in their relative meaningfulness, while Burton & Bruce argue that uniqueness is the crucial variable. As yet existing empirical evidence cannot be explained within the framework of either of these accounts, although the Burton & Bruce (1992) proposal has the advantage of being implemented as an interactive activation model. This paper describes the case of a patient who, following a stroke, retained the ability to access `unique' semantic information for familiar people she is no longer able to name. It is argued that this pattern of performance provides difficulties for the Burton & Bruce model. However, it can be accounted for by Cohen's account, and a modified version of Burton & Bruce's model (Bruce, Burton & Walker, 1994).     Event-related brain potentials differentiate priming and recognition to familiar and unfamiliar faces [Text] / Henri Begleiter, Bernice Porjesz, Wenyu Wang // Electroencephalogr. and Clin. Neurophysiol. - 1995. - Vol. 94, N 1. - P41-49 . - ISSN 0921-884X
Recent studies from our laboratory have resulted in the identification of an event-related potential (ERP) correlate of a visual memory process. This memory process is reflected by a reduction in the voltage of the visual memory potential (VMP) to repeated pictures of unfamiliar faces compared to novel pictures of faces. In the current experiment we used unfamiliar and famous faces in an identical repetition priming paradigm, while the subject differentially recognized famous from non-famous faces. Significant differences in response times were obtained between primed and unprimed familiar faces, but not between primed and unprimed unfamiliar faces. The VMP was reduced to primed unfamiliar faces and significantly diminished to primed familiar faces compared to unprimed stimuli. Priming was typically reflected by a reduction of the VMP at the occipito-temporal region, whereas recognition resulted in a diminution of the VMP at both the occipito-temporal region and at the frontal region. These data support the involvement of differential neural systems for priming and recognition of visual stimuli.     Demonstration of a caricature advantage in children [Text] / Sarah V. Stevengae // CPC: Cah. psychol. cognitive. - 1995. - Vol. 14, N 4. - P325-341 . - ISSN 0249-9185
Recent work by Rhodes and McLean (1990) leads to the suggestion that the caricature advantage may be usefully viewed as an indicator of expertise. In this light, the performance of young children is examined. An experiment is described in which children from 6 to 8 years performed a learned identification task with unfamiliar faces that were either veridical or caricatured. Across all ages names were learnt faster when paired with caricatured faces than when paired with veridical counterparts. This suggests that children are sensitive to facial distinctiveness in a way that has previously only been attributed to experts with a stimulus class. These results are discussed with reference to Valentine's (1991) multidimensional face space model. In addition, the development of a sensitivity to distinctiveness and configural information with increasing expertise is explored.     Craigie, Mark.

    Putting faces to names [Text] / Mark Craigie, Richard J. Hanley // Brit. J. Psychol. - 1997. - Vol. 88, N 1. - P157-171 . - ISSN 0007-1269
An experiment is reported which investigated participants' ability to remember a person's face when they were presented with the person's name. During the learning phase, participants were shown 18 unfamiliar faces together with a name and occupation. At test, participants were presented with a name and were asked to indicate the face and occupation that had been presented with that name at learning. Results showed that participants' ability to remember the face was contingent upon their ability to remember the occupation that had been presented with the name. When participants were presented with a face and were asked to remember the name, performance was also contingent upon correctly remembering the associated occupation, consistent with the findings of McWeeny, Young, Hay & Ellis (1987). No such contingencies were apparent when participants were given an occupation and were asked to remember the associated name and face; participants frequently remembered the name but not the face, or the face without the name. These results are consistent with the serial access model of person identification proposed by Bruce & Young (1986), and with more recent developments proposed by Valentine, Bredart, Lawson & Ward (1991) and Craigie & Hanley (1993) in which there are no direct links between the representation of a person's name in memory and visual information about their facial appearance. The mnemonic strategies that were used by the participants during the learning phase of the experiment were also examined. These strategies help explain those few occasions on which participants appear to be able to link names to faces without identity-specific semantic information.     Intra- and inter-modal repetition priming of familiar faces and voices [Text] / Hadyn D. Ellis, Dylan M. Jones, Nick Mosdell // Brit. J. Psychol. - 1997. - Vol. 88, N 1. - P143-156 . - ISSN 0007-1269
Two experiments explored repetition priming for familiar voices and faces. Expt 1 revealed that, like faces, prior exposure to a voice in a gender judgment task speeds its subsequent classification as familiar or unfamiliar, some minutes later. Faces and voices do not prime one another, however; a result consistent with the notion that evidence is initially accumulated separately for voices and faces. In Expt 2, a prediction derived from the IAC model of Burton, Bruce & Johnston (1990) was explored. The results confirmed that inter-modal repetition priming occurs when the interval between exposures to different personal identification stimuli are separated by a short SOA. This result is consistent with similar ones reported by Calder (1993) and Young, Flude, Hellawell & Ellis (1994) for face-name combinations.     Attractiveness and the memorability of faces: Only a matter of distinctiveness? [Text] / Julie A. Sarno, Thomas R. Alley // Amer. J. Psychol. - 1997. - Vol. 110, N 1. - P81-92 . - ISSN 0002-9556
This study investigated the independent and combined effects of attractiveness and distinctiveness on face recognition. In a preliminary study, subjects rated the distinctiveness of 90 standardized facial photographs. These ratings and previously obtained ratings of attractiveness were used to select 12 target faces for a standard face recognition task. The results confirmed that more distinctive faces are remembered better. Attractiveness was a poor predictor of recognition, however, especially when variation in distinctiveness was controlled. These results indicate that a new perspective on the role of attractiveness in face recognition is needed, and they also support arguments that facial distinctiveness is a fundamental variable in recognition performance.
