Аннотация: This paper attempts to describe the properties and psychological traits of Polish managers on the basis of empirical studies carried out by the authors. The profile was drawn with reference to the specific Polish economic situation in the times of transforming a centrally-controlled economy into a free-market economy. The studies were conducted in state-owned firms in bad financial conditions, during diagnostic and training workshops, and the methods were earlier used by the managers of the firms in order to assess their own potentials and capabilities. The studies involved a measurement of temperamental traits, intellectual abilities, intelligence, personality traits, abilities of making acquaintances and, finally, social behaviour. The needs of the staff in the firms were also diagnosed as well as the reciprocal fit between the individual and the organization he or she works for. The findings show that there is large potential in the people who work and function in industrial structures of high inertia and small adaptative capabilities. The study points out also to those fundamental areas of human life which should be developed by all means as well as to the capabilites requesting educating the staff in order to secure effective activity in the changed economic conditions. Аннотация: The paper contains a comparative analysis of the state of knowledge and the advancement of research relating to entrepreneurship in Poland and in some industrially developed countries (e.g. in the USA), as well as in the developing ones. First the research is described in a historical survey, starting from the earliest ideas of Protestant ethic of work (Weber 1904) to the most recent descriptions of entrepreneurs (e.g. by Brockhaus 1982; Winslow, Solomon 1989; Hisrich 1990). In the final part of the paper it is argued that it is useful to deal with entrepreneurship from the point of view of economic psychology, and it is shown also that the issues in question are very important in our present economic transformations in Poland.
