Sensation induced by topical ocular diagnostic agents as a function of temperature [Text] : abstr. Annu. Meet. Amer. Acad. Optometry, Boston, Mass., Dec. 9-14, 1993 / Anne V. Dang, Mark Swan, Ruth E. Manny // Optometry and Vision Sci. - 1993. - Vol. 70, N 12 Suppl. - P167-168 . - ISSN 1040-5488

Аннотация: Topical ocular diagnostic agents are routinely used during vision examinations. One side effect of these drugs is ocular discomfort. While this reaction is short-lived, the instillation is often a source of anxiety. This study examined the effects of temperature on ocular comfort. Subjects were screened to exclude those at risk for adverse reactions to the 4 test agents (Tetracaine HCl 0.5% , Proparacaine HCl 0.5%, Cyclopentolate HCl 1%, Phenylephrine HCl 2.5%) and for abnormal corneal sensitivity. Each subject was randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 drug groups. Three temperature levels (23deg. C [room temperature], 15deg. C [coldest common storage temperature], & 27deg.C [warmest common storage temperature]) were assessed by each subject over 2 test sessions, separated by at least 1 week. Magnitude estimation was used to compare the sensation induced by the test drug to a reference drop of artificial tears (23deg.C). The subjects ranking of comfort indicated 27deg.C was the least comfortable temperature for all drug groups. For Proparacaine and Cyclopentolate, 15deg. C was more comfortable than 23deg.C. For Phenylephrine and Tetracaine, 15deg. and 23deg.C were not appreciably different. Thus, the clinical practice of carrying agents in one's pocket in order to raise the temperature for improved comfort is not efficacious. Cooling of the drops before instillation may be effective but, only for some drugs
