В ст. представлены рез-ты исследования удовлетворенности жизнью, депрессии и самооценки престарелых женщин, считающих себя только домохозяйками, только пенсионерками либо и домохозяйками, и пенсионерками одновременно. Опрошено 242 чернокожих и 622 белых женщин старше 60 лет. Обнаружено, что пенсионерки и домохозяйки не отличаются друг от другого по уровню психол. благополучия. Женщины, считающие себя одновременно пенсионерками и домохозяйками (проигрывающие 2 роли одновременно), демонстрировали более высокую самооценку и более низкий уровень депрессии, чем женщины, проигрывающие только 1 роль (домохозяйки или пенсионерки). Обнаружено, что существенными для психол. благополучия женщин факторами являются также возраст, уровень образования, состояние здоровья и семейное положение. Библ. 50.

Поступок мог быть нейтральным, позитивным или негативным. Некоторых испытуемых, получивших сведения о негативном поступке человека, просили "забыть" о нем, поскольку он был либо "конфиденциальным", либо "неправильным". Испытуемые, получившие сообщение о "конфиденциальном" негативном поступке, оценили совершившего его человека более негативно, чем испытуемые, получившие информацию о "неправильности" поступка. Испытуемые, получившие информацию о злостном негативном поведении человека, оценили его наиболее негативно по сравнению с др. испытуемыми. Показано, что информация о подлежащем забыванию "конфиденциальном" негативном поступке воспроизводится лучше, чем информация о "неправильном" поступке. Библ. 26.

Аннотация: The relation between the sensing (S)/intuition (N) dimension of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and moral development was investigated using two samples of 74 participants each who administered the MBTI and Rest's (1988) Defining Issues Test (DIT). Correlation coefficients were computed for the P scores of the DIT and for the continuous scores of each of the four preference scales of the MBTI. The coefficients of the two samples were statistically pooled, and the results supported the hypothesis that, of the four personality dimensions of the MBTI, the S-N dimension would be the only one to have a positive relation with one's level of moral reasoning. Аннотация: When confronted with males and females deviating from society's sex-based gender role prescriptions, people tend to respond more negatively to the males' transgressions. In order to develop an understanding of the reasoning behind this phenomenon, two theories were tested. The social status model predicts that males are punished because feminine behavior is lower in status than masculine behavior. The sexual orientation hypothesis predicts that, for males, there is a stronger perceived link between gender roles and sexuality and that a male acting in a feminine way is more likely to be considered a homosexual than a female acting in a masculine way. A group of mostly Caucasian participants were asked to rate a male or female target, performing in either a male- or female-valued manner, on variables assessing social status and perceived homosexuality. The results suggested that the basic assumption of the social status model (i.e., higher male role status) could not be upheld; hence this hypothesis could not adequately be tested. However, strong support emerged for the sexual orientation hypothesis. The functions of homophobic attitudes and the idea that these two models may not be mutually exclusive, especially from within a developmental framework, are discussed. Канада, Brock Univ. Аннотация: In an exploratory study of the perceived interpersonal power of women in three subcultures in Kenya, urban lower class, urban middle class, and rural traditional, a story telling technique was utilized to elicit information about the women's perceptions of their interpersonal power relative to men and their coping strategies. Theme analysis of the stories revealed group differences which may reflect the women's position in the context of social change, urbanization, and detribalization going on in Kenya. The stories of the urban lower class group indicated high vulnerability, low interpersonal power, and a strategy of compliance and submissiveness. The urban middle class women produced stories which indicated low vulnerability and high interpersonal power with a strategy of nurturance ans support of partner. The theme in the stories of the rural women revolved around childbearing and showed low vulnerability and low interpersonal power relative to men. The results are discussed in terms of the negative and positive effects of social change for Kenyan women. Библ. 16

Аннотация: Экономико-психологические исследования, выполненные в рамках деятельностного подхода, показывают, что потребительские предпочтения определяются не экономическими критериями (цена товара и т. д.), а целями деятельности человека (например, обнаружено, что характер выбора товаров для себя существенно отличается от выбора товаров для других, т. е. на продажу). Общие установки сознания, включая идеологические, фиксируемые на уровне опросов общественного мнения, существенно не влияют на потребительский выбор (либо их влияние не очень значительно). Аннотация: This study is an examination of the relationship between disease severity, social role strain, and psychological well-being among a group of women suffering from the chronic disease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). In an attempt to explore the question of why chronic disease has a powerful negative impact on some people, causing them to become depressed or anxious, while leaving others relatively unaffected psychologically, we predicted that psychological distress would result in SLE patients when their illness affected their ability to perform valued social roles. Results confirmed this mediator hypothesis, suggesting, in fact, that disease severity has little psychological effect apart from the distress engendered by role strain. This finding indicates the importance of safeguarding patients' social roles in the psychosocial management of the illness. Библ. 36

Аннотация: The paper adopts a historical and crosscultural perspective in considering the values that underlie the adoption by men of the wariior role. It demonstrates that warrior values, although they may differ in terms of specific attributes, are widespread among young adult males in non-state subsistence cultures. In politically and economically more elaborate societies warrior castes of high status have tended to evolve; the equestrian elite of the Roman Republic, the knights of Medieval Europe and the Japanesse Samural exemplity this development. The paper traces the subsequent evolution of warrior values in Europe in particular, via nineteenth century currents of Social Darwinism, Romanticism and nationalism, culminating in the Waffen - SS. Warrior values in their various forms are shown to accentuate and glorify recurrent themes in more broadly based conceptions of masculinities

Here, however author arguesthat a more effective way to undo the privileged status of the two-and-only-two categories of sex/gender/desire that are currently treated in Western culture as normal and natural may be to explode or proliferate such categories (i. e., to turn the volume up) rather than try to eliminate them (i. e., to turn the volume down). In making this argument, author discusses the work of three scholars whose ideas are central: philosopher Judith Butler, anthropologist Mary Douglas, and developmental geneticist Anne Fausto-Sterling. Аннотация: Traditional and nontraditional women and men's perceptions of ideal people, in terms of both traits and physiques, were assessed using 80 male and 80 female Caucasian undergraduates as study participants. The data indicated that traditional women and men perceived the ideal male as mesomorphic and as having more instrumental than expressive traits. Nontraditional women and men also favored a mesomorphic physique for the ideal male, but they differed from traditionals in that they saw this mesomorphic male as being androgynous in regard to traits. Concerning the ideal female, traditional and nontraditional women and men preferred an androgynous physique, but they differed in their perceptions of the ideal personality for a woman. Traditional women and men perceived their ideal women as having more expressive than instrumental traits, whereas nontraditional women and men saw their ideal women as being androgynous in regard to traits. Аннотация: Factor analysis of 18 Likert-type items dealing with gender stereotypes about family roles was conducted and yielded two measures: one focused on marital roles and one focussed on child rearing. Respondents were parents of children in the third and fourth grades of a large industrialized city in the Midwest. The sample included 364 families equally divided between middle and lower class with 23% African American and 77% European American. For both scales, more stereotyped scores were obtained by parents who were lower in social status, less educated, full-time homemakers, African Americans, and fathers. Parents' scores related to a separate measure of children's stereotypes and the marital-role attitudes related to actual roles reported by family members. Daughters whose parents obtained less stereotyped scores had a more internal locus of control, showed a trend toward more independent coping skills, and-in the middle class-obtained higher scores on achievement tests. Аннотация: Three experiments investigated how moral judgements of harmful acts and omissions are affected by information about social roles. Subjects were given vignettes in which the relationship between an actor and victim was varied along the dimensions of solidarity (e. g. friends versus strangers) and hierachy (e. g. superior versus equal; the terms are from Hamilton & Sanders, 1981). Subjects were asked to judge the morality of the actor in each case, both for a harmful omission (e. g. intentionally withholding the truth) and for an equivalent act (e. g. actively lying). Subjects judged the bahaviour worse in the act than the omission. Judgements were also affected by role relationships. The act-omission difference was also greater in the low-responsibility roles. Responses to the high-responsibility roles seem to reflect in a consequentialist perspective, focusing on outcomes rather than prohibitions. Аннотация: This study addressed three sources of variability in the perception of sexual harassment: the gender of the observer, the gender combination of the harasser and victim, and the role relationship between the harasser and victim. College students (N=197), approximately 80% of whom were Caucasian, single, and in their early 20s, were randomly divided into two groups. In one group, the harasser was a man and the victim was a woman. In the other group, the harasser was a woman and the victim was a man. Participants rated the degree to which they thought sexual harassment occurred in 20 hypothetical interactions in each of three situations using a 7-point sexual harassment scale. Men and women rated the situations alike as long as the harasser was a man and the victim was a woman. When the perpetrator was a woman and the victim was a man, men gave significantly lower ratings than women. In contrast, women's ratings were the same regardless of the gender of the harasser. Harassment ratings also varied as a function of the power differential between the harasser and victim. Аннотация: This study examined the relationships between racial identity attitudes and gender role conflict in a sample of 95 African American men ages 23-80 years old. Participants completed the 1981 Black Racial Identity Attitude Scale by Parham and Helms and the 1986 Gender Role Conflict Scale by O'Neil, Helms, Gable, David, and Wrightsman. Results indicated that racial identity attitudes were differentially related to patterns of gender role conflict when racial identity is externally defined. However, an internally defined racial identity had no relationship to gender role conflict. Results are discussed in terms of the significance of racial identity for understanding African American men's conflict associated with traditional male gender role standards and expectations. Аннотация: French male and female children performed a cognitive-perceptual task while anticipating or not public comparisons of their score with probably less fortunate others at a time when concerns about fitting in to social expectations were maximized. As predicted, boys performed better and girls poorer when social comparison was anticipated than when it was not. This suggested that task performance can depend on the compatibility of the social context of cognition with gender motivations or appropriate norms.
