Evaluation of aggressive interactions in interpersonal and intergroup contexts [Text] / Sabine Otten, Amelie Mummendey, Michael Wenzel // Aggress. Behav. - 1995. - Vol. 21, N 3. - P205-224 . - ISSN 0096-140X
The article deals with possible differences in the evaluation of interpersonal and intergroup aggression. Study I investigated whether the typical perspective-specific divergence in judgments about aggressive interactions (with actors evaluating their behavior as more reasonable and less inappropriate than recipients) varied in interpersonal and intergroup contexts. Additionally, the possible mediating influence of lay epistemic motivation and subjective judgmental confidence was explored. Results indicated that the social context had an important impact on the evaluation of aggressive interactions: there was a lower dissent between actors and recipients in the intergroup than in the interpersonal condition. However, the direction of this pattern of data differed from what could be derived from theories of aggressive and intergroup behavior. Subjective confidence and lay epistemic motivation did not influence the inappropriateness ratings. Study II tried to shed some further light on the context-specific evaluation of aggressive interaction by presenting episodes of different severity and by obtaining judgments on both actions as well as reactions. Results showed that-irrespective of severity-aggressive reactions were evaluated more negatively in intergroup contexts. It is proposed that this effect stemmed from context-specific differences in the application of the norm of reciprocity. Westfalische Wilhelms-Univ., Psychol. Inst.     Men's and women's perceptions of non-consensual sexual intercourse [Text] / Angela J.Hattery Freetly, Emily W. Kane // Sex Roles. - 1995. - Vol. 33, N 11-12. - P785-802 . - ISSN 0360-0025
This paper examines the reactions of college men and women (primarily white) to scenarios depicting non-consensual intercourse between men and women with varying levels of prior intimacy. Women were more likely than men to consider the scenarios unacceptable, and the gender difference increased with the level of prior intimacy between the victim and the offender in the scenario. Respondents who reported knowing a rape victim were also more likely to consider the scenarios unacceptable, and this effect was significantly larger for men. We consider the implication of these results for understanding the role of salience of sexual assault and self-interest in shaping men's and women's reactions to non-consensual intercourse. The present symposium unites some European researchers working on various lacets of self-cognition - the actor/observer effect, false uniqueness, unrealistic optimism and illusory superiority. They will report recent advances in their own work in areas such as competitive swimming, diet and health. Three themes will permeate the symposium: the current status of the various theoretical explanations of these phenomena in the light of the findings presented, the plausibility of integration at the theoretical level (to what extent can they be reallsticaly viewed as diverse manifestations of a common underlying process?) and the extent, nature and implications of these phenomena for social psychology outside the laboratory

Traditional vs. nontraditional women and men's perceptions of the personalities and physiques of ideal women and men [Text] / Marc A. Lindner [et al.] // Sex Roles. - 1995. - Vol. 32, N 9-10. - P675-689 . - ISSN 0360-0025
Traditional and nontraditional women and men's perceptions of ideal people, in terms of both traits and physiques, were assessed using 80 male and 80 female Caucasian undergraduates as study participants. The data indicated that traditional women and men perceived the ideal male as mesomorphic and as having more instrumental than expressive traits. Nontraditional women and men also favored a mesomorphic physique for the ideal male, but they differed from traditionals in that they saw this mesomorphic male as being androgynous in regard to traits. Concerning the ideal female, traditional and nontraditional women and men preferred an androgynous physique, but they differed in their perceptions of the ideal personality for a woman. Traditional women and men perceived their ideal women as having more expressive than instrumental traits, whereas nontraditional women and men saw their ideal women as being androgynous in regard to traits. The results are discussed within the framework of Bem's gender schema and enculturated lens theories. США, Dep. of Psychol., 5742 Little Hall, Univ. of Maine, Orono, ME 04469-5742. 50

Implications of sex and gender differences for self: Perceived advantages and disadvantages of being the other gender [Text] / Arnie Cann, Elizabeth D. Vann // Sex Roles. - 1995. - Vol. 33, N 7-8. - P531-541 . - ISSN 0360-0025
Undergraduate students (34 females and 28 males/44 Caucasian, 16 African-American, 2 Asian) were asked to list the advantages and the disadvantages that they imagined they would experience if they were the other gender. A separate group of undergraduate raters then classified each of the statements into one of four categories designed to reflect social (social roles or social appearance) or physical differences (sexual or non-sexual physical differences) between the sexes. The number of responses each participant generated within each category served as the dependent variable. By far the largest number of responses pertained to the social roles category, and there were no participant gender differences for that category. Participant gender differences were observed in the social appearance and sexual physical difference categories, indicating males and females agreement that males have more advantages. Overall, females listed more advantages to a change in gender, while males indicated more disadvantages. Results are interpreted as providing insights into the personal and practical implications of differences between males and females.     Social inference and individual differences in aggression: Evidence for spontaneous judgments of hostility [Text] / Arnaldo Zelli, L.Rowell Huesmann, Daniel Cervone // Aggress. Behav. - 1995. - Vol. 21, N 6. - P405-417 . - ISSN 0096-140X
This research examined the hypothesis that aggressive vs. nonaggressive individuals differ in their spontaneous trait inferences, i.e., inferences made without any conscious intention of inferring characteristics of an actor. We anticipated that spontaneous processing conditions would be more revealing of aggresive/nonaggressive differences than would conditions that prompt deliberate inference processes. We used a cued-recall paradigm. Aggressive and nonaggressive subjects were instructed to memorize sentences that were open to either hostile or nonhostile interpretations. Sentence recall was then cued by either hostile dispositional terms or by words that were linked semantically to the element of the sentences. Within the spontaneous inference condition, semantic cues prompted twice as much recall as hostile cues among nonaggressive subjects, whereas dispositional cues aided recall more than semantic cues among aggressive subjects. As predicted, within the deliperate inference conditions there were no aggressive/nonaggressive differences. The nature of spontaneous vs. deliberate inferential processes and the advantages of spontaneous inference paradigms for testing predictions about schema-based processing in aggression are discussed.     The impact of differentially valued overlapping categorizations upon the differentiation between positively, negatively, and neutrally evaluated social groups [Text] / Norbert Vanbeselaere // Eur. J. Soc. Psychol. - 1996. - Vol. 26, N 1. - P75-96 . - ISSN 0046-2772
The present study attempted to determine whether the impact of overlapping categorizations upon intergroup differentiation should be attributed to cognitive category differentiation processes or whether motivational social identity processes do also intervene. Experimentally created groups were placed in one of four overlapping categorization conditions: the overlapping category was either absent or it was affectively positive, negative, or neutral. These groups were also differentially evaluated by providing them with positive, negative, or no feedback. Subjects estimated then the performance of the two groups in an experimental task. Thereupon, their self-esteem and their liking of the groups were also measured. The presence of an overlapping category had no impact upon the performance evaluations of positively evaluated groups. Negatively evaluated groups favoured the outgroup but the presence of an overlapping category led also to a reduction of this perceived ingroup inferiority. The groups of the no-feedback condition exhibited ingroup favouritism. The presence of a positive and of a neutral overlapping category reduced this bias but the presence of a negatively evaluated overlapping category strongly enhanced it. The impact of overlapping categories upon the liking measure was less pronounced. Group members' self-esteem was influenced by the experimentally manipulated factors, but these effects did not really support social identity theory. The theoretical implications of the data are discussed. 32

    Ratings of gender appropriateness of sports participation: Effects of gender-based schematic processing [Text] / Nathalie Koivula // Sex Roles. - 1995. - Vol. 33, N 7-8. - P543-557 . - ISSN 0360-0025
The domain of sports and physical activity has traditionally been considered to be appropriate for men and not compatible with the feminine role. Because gender-based schematic processing has been shown to affect attitudes and behavior, there might be differences in the categorization of sports as masculine or feminine, between sex-typed and non-sex-typed individuals. The findings in this study, including 104 women and 103 men (96.6% Caucasian, 2.9% Arabic, 0.5% Black) showed differences in gender appropriateness ratings between groups classified according to the Bem Sex Role Inventory, and also between men and women. Men, in general, and sex-typed men, in particular, were more inclined to stereotype sports as masculine or feminine. An explanation might be that these individuals engage to a greater extent in gender-based schematic processing. A possible additional explanation could be that childhood socialization into sports may serve as a means of providing proof of boys' manliness and the validation of prejudices against women, and that the need for this proof is stronger among sex-typed men.     Gender differences in the value of contribution to intimate relationships: Egalitarian relationships are not always perceived to be equitable [Text] / Pamela C. Regan, Susan Sprecher // Sex Roles. - 1995. - Vol. 33, N 3-4. - P221-238 . - ISSN 0360-0025
Little research has directly addressed the role of gender in perceptions of self vs. parther's contributions to a relationship, despite the fact that partners in heterosexual relationships often disagree about whether their relative contributions result in an equitable relationship [N. W. VanYperen and B. P. Buunk (1990), "A Longitudinal Study of Equity and Satisfaction in Intimate Relationships," European Journal of Social Psychology, Vol. 20, pp. 287-309]. The primary purpose of this investigation was to systematically examine the assiciation between gender and the perceived value of several different types of contributions made by each partner to a committed relationship. We considered both the gender of the perceiver and the source of the contributions (self vs. partner). A sample of 212 men and 348 women (most of whom were college students; 87% white) were asked to judge the value of their own and their partner's hypothetical contributions to a marital or long-term cohabiting relationship. The results indicated that men and women generally agreed about the value of the contributions made by themselves and their partners. However, gender differences in the perceived value of many contributions depended on whether the contribution was made by self or partner (e.g., men attributed more worth to their partner's sexual faithfulness than to their own, whereas women believed that both partners should receive equal value for this contribution). These perceptual differences suggest that at times it may be difficult for partners to agree about the equity of their ongoing relationships.     Temporary residential cohabitation of children from Northern Ireland [Text] / Ignatius J. Toner // Irish J. Psychol. - 1995. - Vol. 16, N 1. - P67-82 . - ISSN 0303-3910
An exploratory investigation was conducted to assess the evaluations of self and others by boys and girls from Northern Ireland both at the beginning and at the conclusion of a six-week residential cohabitation experience in the United States. Sixteen boys and 16 girls, ten to 12 years of age, participated in a program which paired Catholic and Protestant children. A methodology was developed to increase the social acceptability of the differential evaluations and to reduce experimenter demand. The children set in rank order the attractiveness of Christian names. The relative ranking of roommate names decreased while, for many children, the relative ranking of own name increased during the period of the program. The rankings of names of the other children in the travelling group, unaffected by the intervention, reflected an own-gender preference but not a own-religion preference. The rankings of stereotypic names reflected both an own-gender and an own-religion preference both before and after the intervention.
Three experiments investigated how moral judgements of harmful acts and omissions are affected by information about social roles. Subjects were given vignettes in which the relationship between an actor and victim was varied along the dimensions of solidarity (e. g. friends versus strangers) and hierachy (e. g. superior versus equal; the terms are from Hamilton & Sanders, 1981). Subjects were asked to judge the morality of the actor in each case, both for a harmful omission (e. g. intentionally withholding the truth) and for an equivalent act (e. g. actively lying). Subjects judged the bahaviour worse in the act than the omission. Judgements were also affected by role relationships. The act-omission difference was also greater in the low-responsibility roles. Responses to the high-responsibility roles seem to reflect in a consequentialist perspective, focusing on outcomes rather than prohibitions.     Gain-loss-frame in outcome-interdependence: Does it influence equality or equity considerations? [Text] / Dreu Carsten K. W. De // Eur. J. Soc. Psychol. - 1996. - Vol. 26, N 2. - P315-324 . - ISSN 0046-2772
Research suggests that framing outcomes as gains produces stronger concern for distributive justice than framing outcomes as losses. Unfortunately, however, this prior research manipulated own and other's outcomes only (and not own and other's input). Hence, it remained unclear whether framing affects concern with equality - everyone gets an equal share regardless whether one `deserves' it or not - and/or equity - the share one gets is a function of the proportionality of one's own, and the other parties' inputs. The current experiment addressed this problem. Subjects (N=94) read a scenario manipulating own and some co-workers' inputs, and subsequently rated satisfaction with pairs of outcomes providing themselves with more, equal or less outcomes than their co-worker. Outcomes to oneself exceeded expectation (gain-frame) or remained below it (loss-frame). Corroborating and expanding prior research, results showed that people are more concerned with both equality and equity when they have a gain-rather than loss-frame. In addition, results revealed evidence for a self-serving bias, in that people prefer equity or equality, depending on what serves best their own interests. It is concluded that frame affects the degree to which people are concerned about distributive justice. Univ. of Groningen, Dep. of Psychology, Grote Kruisstraat 2/1, 9712 TS Groningen.     Attribution of gender to a gender-unspecified individual: An evaluation of the people = male hypothesis [Text] / Rebecca Davis Merritt, Cynthia J. Kok // Sex Roles. - 1995. - Vol. 33, N 3-4. - P145-157 . - ISSN 0360-0025
Аннотация: J. Silveira [(1980), "Generic Masculine Words and Thinking," Women's Studies International Quarterly, Vol. 3, pp. 165-178] suggested that most individuals adopt a "people=male" bias evidenced by gender-unspecified individuals being attributed male gender. We evaluated whether subject gender, subject status on the Bem Sex Role Inventory [BSRI; S. L. Bem (1974), "The Measurement of Psychological Androgyny," Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Vol. 42, pp. 155-162], or situational context would affect the likelihood of subjects attributing male gender to a gender-unspecified individual. College students of primarily European-American descent (82 females and 85 males) read one of three dialogue scripts. Following memory distraction tasks, subjects attributed gender to the target character. Across scripts, there was a strong people=male bias, as subjects were more likely to attribute male, rather than female, gender to the target character. Neither subject gender or BSRI classification affected this bias. Situational context in the scripts had a marginally significant effect. 35

Effects of gender and situation on the perception of sexual harassment [Text] / Roger C. Katz, Roseann Hannon, Leslie Whitten // Sex Roles. - 1996. - Vol. 34, N 1-2. - P35-42 . - ISSN 0360-0025
This study addressed three sources of variability in the perception of sexual harassment: the gender of the observer, the gender combination of the harasser and victim, and the role relationship between the harasser and victim. College students (N=197), approximately 80% of whom were Caucasian, single, and in their early 20s, were randomly divided into two groups. In one group, the harasser was a man and the victim was a woman. In the other group, the harasser was a woman and the victim was a man. Participants rated the degree to which they thought sexual harassment occurred in 20 hypothetical interactions in each of three situations using a 7-point sexual harassment scale. Men and women rated the situations alike as long as the harasser was a man and the victim was a woman. When the perpetrator was a woman and the victim was a man, men gave significantly lower ratings than women. In contrast, women's ratings were the same regardless of the gender of the harasser. Harassment ratings also varied as a function of the power differential between the harasser and victim. The more egalitarian the relationship, the less likely participants were to perceive the behavior as sexually harassing. США, Dep. of Psychology, Univ. of the Pacific, Stockton, CA 95211. 17

    Expectation of outgroup behaviour: can you trust the outgroup? [Text] / Jonathan Moy, Sik Hung Ng // Eur. J. Soc. Psychol. - 1996. - Vol. 26, N 2. - P333-340 . - ISSN 0046-2772
Outgroups are usually viewed with suspicion and expected to discriminate against the ingroup. The present study demonstrated that ingroup members attributed past discriminatory behaviour committed by individuals of unknown group membership more to outgroup members than to either ingroup members or members of a neutral group. In contrast, past egalitarian behaviour was attributed less to outgroup members than to members of a neutral group. Ingroup members also expected more discrimination from a future outgroup allocator than from a future neutral group allocator. Finally, the study showed that ingroup members' own behaviour in allocating money became more biased in favour of ingroup members vis-a-vis outgroup members when the future allocator was from an outgroup rather than from a neutral group and when they had witnessed the discriminatory behaviour of an allocator in the past.
The study explored the effects of "others" positivity, the role of experimentally created positivity, and uncertainty of self-evaluation on particular but important dimension on cognitive and affective consequences of social comparison. Responses to received information of, "others" differed as a function of positivity of target and level of manipulated self-evaluations. The differences in affective consequences dependent on type of affect were also observed. The results suggest that in some conditions information of "others" did not activate motives of social comparisons. 40
