    Self-injurious behaviour and the serotonin link: Two case illustrations and theoretical overview [Text] / Syed Hasan Jawed, Vallepur H. R. Krishnan, Geraldine Cassidy // Irish J. Psychol. Med. - 1994. - Vol. 11, N 4. - P165-168 . - ISSN 0790-9667
Self-injurious behaviour (SIB) is one of the challenging behaviours that is exhibited by people with severe learning disabilities. Various current aetiological theories of SIB have failed to provide a feasible model of care for this complex clinical problem. Recent advances in the understanding of serotonin neurotransmitter function may provide a way forward in the management of SIB. Case histories of two people whose SIB responded to antidepressant medication are described. Possible implication of serotonin neurotransmitter function in the causation of SIB is explored and relevant recent literature is reviewed.     Learning disabilities and hyperkinetic disorders [Text] / Sadaaki Shirataki // Asian Med. J. - 1996. - Vol. 39, N 1. - P22-27 . - ISSN 0004-461X
A child may often manifest both a learning disability and hyperkinesis, however a common cause for both conditions has not been identified. There are currently vigorous arguments in the field of education concerning these two concepts. "Learning disability" was originally an educational term. However, since the definition of this concept refers to the possible involvement of the central nervous system, this concept has also acquired medical aspects. In the field of medicine, conditions such as developmental alexia and developmental dysgraphia have been used diagnostically. The definitions of these conditions overlap considerably with the term learning disabilities. This paper briefly describes features of learning disabilities and hyperkinetic disorders, their relationship to developmental neuropsychological disturbances (a medical concept), and the diagnosis, treatment, and methods for guiding children with these disturbances. Furthermore, since these conditions can lead to psychiatric problems, the necessity of approaching these conditions within the framework of school mental health of infants and school children has been emphasized.     Dagnan, Dave.

    The psychometric properties of a brief scale for assessing challenging behaviour [Text] / Dave Dagnan, John McEvoy, Peter Sturmey // Irish J. Psychol. - 1995. - Vol. 16, N 1. - P21-28 . - ISSN 0303-3910
This paper describes the psychometric properties of a 15-item rating scale for the assessment of challenging behaviour exhibited by people with learning disabilities. Item selection was guided by the factor structure of the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist (Aman & Singh, 1986). Factor analysis of the new scale gives a 4 factor structure. The factors are labelled; Impulsive and Aggressive Behaviour, Passive Behaviour and Lethargy, Stereotypic and Self-injurious Behaviour and Active Social Avoidance. The scale has high internal reliability and moderate inter-rater reliability. Whether ratings were made on severity or frequency of behaviour made little difference to the inter-rater reliability. It is suggested that the scale may be useful in large scale surveys such as take place in the construction of population registers.     The minter affect designation test: Development of children's emotion labeling [Text] : [Pap.] Annu. Meet. Sci. Programm, APA Div., Toronto, Aug. 9-12, 1996 / D. Minter // Clin. Neuropsychol. - 1996. - Vol. 10, N 3. - P324 . - ISSN 0920-1637

    Cooper, Sally-Ann.

    Depressive episodes in adults with learning disabilities [Text] / Sally-Ann Cooper, Richard A. Collacott // Irish J. Psychol. Med. - 1996. - Vol. 13, N 3. - P105-113 . - ISSN 0790-9667
In view of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Defeat Depression campaign, to review the existing literature on depressive episodes in people with learning disabilities. Review of all papers identified to cover this area. Papers were identified by Medline search and also by direct checking of the contents in the preceding five years of eight key learning disabilities journals, the British Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Bulletin and bibliography in Current Opinions in Psychiatry. Papers about children or odd `depressive' symptoms (rather than the syndrome of depression) were excluded. For over a century it has been recognised that depression can occur in people with learning disabilities. However, the number of studies in this area is very limited. There remain many unanswered questions, such at those of prevalence, clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria, associated social factors, and the evaluation of treatments. Suitable rating scales have yet to be evaluated or devised. The authors propose diagnostic criteria for future use. Research in this important area is very limited. Advances are yet to be made in the clinical assessment and management of the illness. 115

    Developmental dyscalculia: Prevalence and demographic features [Text] / Varda Gross-Tsur, Orly Manor, Ruth S. Shalev // Dev. Med. and Child Neurol. - 1996. - Vol. 38, N 1. - P25-33 . - ISSN 0012-1622
One hundred and forty-three 11-year-old children with developmental dyscalculia, from a cohort of 3029 students, were studied to determine demographic features and prevalence of this primary cognitive disorder. They were evaluated for gender. IQ, linguistic and perceptual skills, symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), socio-economic status and associated learning disabilities. The IQs of the 140 children (75 girls and 65 boys) retained in the study group (three were excluded because of low IQs) ranged from 80 to 129 (mean 98.2, SD 9.9). 26 per cent of the children had symptoms of ADHD, and 17 per cent had dyslexia. Their socio-economic status was significantly lower than that of the rest of the cohort, and 42 per cent had first-degree relatives with learning disabilities. The prevalence of dyscalculia in the original cohort was 6.5 per cent, similar to that of dyslexia and ADHD. However, unlike these other learning disabilities, dyscalculia affected the two sexes in about the same proportions. 35
