Аннотация: Children's conceptions of the development of a verbal skill (the capacity to describe an image) were investigated within the framework of their ideas on evolving phenomena, to see whether features of the development of diachronic thinking (conceptions of change over time) in other domains could be replicated when dealing with children's ideas about language development. Sixty children aged 8 to 12 years were interviewed individually to investigate their perceptions and conceptions of the development of the verbal skill of describing an image. Results showed an important change after the children were 10 years old, when they thought language development evolved by stages, had its own rhythm, and was dissociated from other markers of the flow of time. At this stage, verbal changes were conceived of as a more progressive and integrative construction with qualitative shifts, and ending earlier than was thought by the younger participants. At 11 years of age, participants thought that the development of the verbal ability to describe an image was due to the evolution of internal capacities as well as to experience. These findings confirm the hypothesis that diachronic thinking is an ability of its own, generalizable to diverse contents.
