Аннотация: Protection Mativation Theory is considered as a theoretical framework of the cognitive processes mediating binge drinking. The analysis is based on a self reported questionnaire on binge drinking distributed to 196 students in Brighton Open University Summer School. The questionnaire looks at the effects of health beliefs and coping strategies on the intention to drink at safe levels on any one drinking occasion. Path analysis reveals that health beliefs, coping strategies and demographies account for 41 percent of the variance in behavioural intentions. The implications of these results to interventions aimed at increasing adaptive behaviour are discussed
