Аннотация: Conspiracy theories are common in inter-ethnic conflicts. The social majority sees the minority as the source of society's problems. Various negatively viewed social phenomena are beleved to be inter-connected and are attributed to the actions of a supposedly scheming, homogenous minority, presumed guilty of conspiring against the established order and the social majority. Ideologues relying on conspiracy explanations present themselves as being privileged in their understanding of society; they perceive whan others cannot. The cognitive and emotional dynamics of conspiracy theories offer seemingly simple explanations and solutions to complex societal problems. Comparative study of the use of conspiracy theories in ultra-Protestant, anti-Catholic politics in both Northem Ireland and Scotland indicates that conspiracy ideologues can only operate successfully within a very constrained framework of beliefs. Successful conspiracy theorists have little scope for innovation: the conspiracy ideology constrains both ideologue and followers
