Аннотация: This paper will argue for a qualitative methodology which includes in its concerns the role of persons in generating and making sense of talk and text. This form of analysis will be positioned within the phenomenological, interpretative and discursive approaches to social science. Two concepts to be considered will be self-construction/reconstruction - drawing upon the work of George Herbert Mead, and reflexivity - currently capturing the attention of a number of groups of social scientists. Both concepts point to the need to engage with the presence of persons as agents in the production and the reproduction of research practices and the subjects of those practices, the paper will suggest that the attempt to discover or capture meanings involves a constant interplay between persons and texts and a series of multi-layered negotiations between researcher and participant
