Аннотация: This research investigates social representations of the public sphere in Brazil. It attempts to address how symbolic forms can shape the relationship between the public and the privats spheres. The process of impeachment of the Brazilian president Fernando Collor de Mello, which happened in September 1992, has been descnbed as an event that epitomises the reappearance of the public sphere in Brazil. In 500 years of history this was the first time in which private interests have been subjected to public accountability. It is suggested that the impeachment is an important source of data in this research because it can reveal the ways in which Brazilian society came together in the public space to produce a new quality in their social relationships. It can also reveal the limits and possibilities of new representations of public life. Ongoing social processes such as this provide a prolific ground to the understanding of the conditions which shape social psychological phenomena
