Аннотация: In the present study, we retrospectively analysed the number and the spectrum of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) recovered from different specimens in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients in Frankfurt/Main between 1986 and 1991 (824 and 699 isolates respectively). MAC was the most frequent species in HIV-infected patients (66% of all strains). The non-HIV population showed a wider spectrum of organisms with Mycobacterium xenopi at the top (51.6% of all isolates). A high persentage of non-tuberculous mycobacteria was isolated from respiratory secretions in both HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients (44.6% and 70.1% of strains). In HIV-positives only, NTM isolates originated additionally in 30.3% from blood and in a significant proportion from stools (8.4% of all strains). Therefore, the investigation of blood cultures and stool is of great value in the diagnosis of disseminated mycobacteriosis in AIDS. However, as an exogenous contamination can never be ruled out, critical evaluation of positive mycobacteriological results in both AIDS and non-AIDS patients is mandatory
