Аннотация: There is a striking discrepancy between everyday beliefs and scientific evidence concerning the usefulness of group discussions as a method of idea-generation. Academics, politicians, and the business community are unshakeabie in their conviction that groups can stimulate creativity. Thus, brainstorming as a method of idea-generation is still widely used in business organizations and advertising agencies, in spite of consistent evidence that people produce many more ideas when they work individually rather that in groups. After a brief review of this evidence, authors duscuss a research program in which their colleagues have empirically examined the validity of different theoretical explanations of the productivity loss, authors believe that this research has succeeded in identifying the causes of the productivity loss in interacting groups. In the final part of presentation authors examine the reasons why the "illusion of Group Effectivity", the belief that groups can stimulate creativity, has persisted despite consistent contradictory evidence
