Аннотация: The goal of the study was to investigate the mortality pattern of female nurses in a retrospective cohort study with special focus on suicide. The mortality of nurses was compared with that of the general female population. The main outcome measure was the standardized mortality ratio (SMR). The participants were 2159 female nurses (ie, all registered nurses in Iceland between 1920-1979). A long-lasting healthy worker effect was found in the cohort. A moderate excess of suicide was observed. A deficit was found for stomach cancer, ischemic heart disease, and respiratory disease. When the cohort was divided according to employment time, there was an excess of brain cancer among those with an employment time of less than 20 years, and all the suicides occurred in that group. The deficit of ischemic heart disease and respiratory disease was more pronounced in the group employed more than 20 years. It was concluded that nurses, primarily those with a long employment time, enjoy the benefits of their initial good health, but the moderate excess of suicide could be associated with stress and frustration, which the nurses relate to their work situation. Аннотация: This paper describes research which provide the context for a discussion of how social representations can circumscribe identity possibilities and render feasible certain groups evaluations. Specifically, a research approach is advocated in which Social Identity and Social Representation Theory are integrated within single complementary paradigm, (Breakwell, 1993). A brif but critical examination of both theoretical traditions is offered as the backdrop to this. A case study is described as a means of illustrating the unique potential of the integrated paradigm to predict and explain the meaning of social identity and the evaluations it affords. An investigation is then described involving 178 nurses ranging from Trainee to Charge Nurses were invited to use Q-sorts to describe the meaning of their group membership. As predicted from having identified the types of social representation of nurses available, two different identity orientations emerged: a communal-interpersonal (Patient Centred) and instrumental-intergroup (Professional Distinctiveness). The communal-interpersonal identity orientation was most typical of the lower status trainee nurses and also female nurses. In turn, higher status nurses and also male nurses, articulated a primarily instrumental-intergroup identity orientation. The evaluations signalled by group membership were also predictable from the identity orientations exhibited. Библ. 69

Аннотация: Existing studies have examined the effects of shiftwork on health and performance separately from one another, and from the coping strategies used by shiftworkers. This study tested the hypothesis that these effects interact with each other, and that further investigation of coping strategies could yield useful recommendations for health education. Semi-structured interviews about the health and performance effects of shiftwork were conducted with a sample of 21 nurses. Results showed that nurses perceived the principal health effect of sleep disturbance as underlying many of the negative effects of shiftwork on performance. Despite considerabla consensus among nurses about the health effects of shiftwork, there was great diversity in their reported coping strategies. These individual differences have implications for the effectiveness of education programmes aimed at alleviating negative health effects of shiftwork. Rather than being prescriptive, education should provide a variety of strategies whose effectiveness could be evaluated by individual shiftworkers

Аннотация: This paper describes the development of the Mental Health Professionals Stress Scale (MHPSS): a self-report method of identifying sources of stress for mental health professionals. The 42-item scale, which includes seven subscales, was administered to 154 clinical psychologists and 111 mental health nurses. The MHPSS was found to have good internal consistency (alpha = .87 for clinical psychologists; alpha =.94 for mental health nurses). The preliminary evidence suggests that the concurrent validity of the MHPSS is good. The expected relationships between the scale and between the criterion measures - General Health Questionnaire, a symptom check list, job satisfaction, self-reported stress level and quality of social support - were demonstrated. The results also provide evidence for the discriminant validity of the subscales to measure different aspects of the stress experience. The MHPSS was shown to discriminate between two groups of health professionals who might be expected to differ in their sources of stress. For clinical psychologists the most important source of stress was `professional self-doubt' whereas the major source of stress for mental health nurses was found to be the difficulty of handling potentially violent or difficult patients in the context of scarce staff resources. For both groups, however, `home-work conflict' was the subscale most strongly and consistently associated with mental health outcome. It is concluded that the preliminary evidence regarding the utility of the MHPSS is encouraging, although further data are clearly needed. Аннотация: This paper examines role behavior among women employed in three Red Cross sponsored programs in Viet Nam. In-depth interviews were used to collect data from twenty women who were employed in Viet Nam. Nineteen of the women were White non-Hispanic and one was African American. All had middle or upper middle class backgrounds. Data collected from former Red Cross workers who had served in Viet Nam were analyzed and organized into a typology of roles, including "all-American girl", "sex object", and "deviant". The images portrayed by these women and their conflicting role expectations reflect the difficulties women experience when working in male-dominated environments. Conflict and strain emanated from the variety of role expectations associated with Red Cross work, as well as their own sense of importance compared to others' definitions of their job. The incompatibility between official and unofficial role expectations resulted in role strain. Аннотация: The relationships among a cluster of attitudes toward work and job were investigated using a sample of 171 nurses. The hypothesis was that involvement in work and job, commitment to the employing organization, and satisfaction with the job (overall, and with specific facets of the job) would be significantly correlated. The results showed that involvement was not related to overall satisfaction but only to two specific facets, satisfaction with work and promotion opportunities. In contrast, the degree of relationship between overall and various facets of satisfaction and commitment and between involvement and commitment was moderately high. Аннотация: Anxiety may deter women from attending or returning for cervical screening tests. Nurses routinely carry out cervical smear tests and they were given a one hour briefing to enable them to carry out an intervention to reduce anxiety. In an experimental study 90 women were divided into a control group and an intervention group who were given an intervention which led to an extra ten minutes explanation and discussion. Both groups completed a short questionnaire and the STAI state measure of anixiety before the test, and again after they had received the results. Over 40 per cent of each group reported feeling anxious at the idea of the test, but only 12 per cent in the intervention group felt anxious after the results, compared with 18 per cent of the control group. The mean STAI trait results were significantly reduced in the intervention group but not in the control group

Аннотация: Изучили 188 медицинских сестер, работающих в 1 клинике и 2 больницах. Знания об ожоговой болезни оценивались по шкале Peek, а качество выполнения заданий по Park. Статистическая обработка данных показала достоверное различие в знаниях об ожоговой болезни в зависимости от демографических характеристик испытуемых (возраста, профессионального опыта, специализации отделения, мотивации избрания профессии, удовлетворенности профессией и др.). Отмечены статистически достоверные отличия в качестве выполнения заданий медсестрами в зависимости от демографических характеристик (возраста, вероисповедания, семейного положения, опыта работы, зарплаты и др.). Аннотация: Сообщение основано на изучении данных о 202 медицинских сестрах, работающих в 4 больницах. Анализ показал, что средняя оценка (все оценки по пятибальной системе) общения медсестер в больнице=2,671, конфликтов - 2,998, удовлетворения работой - 2,606. Различия между оценками общения, конфликтов и удовлетворенности работой, полученными в 4 больницах, были статистически достоверны. Оценка общения и удовлетворения работой повышалась с возрастом, рабочим стажем, занимаемой должностью. В организации общения самые высокие оценки были получены при общении со "старшим должностным лицом" (3,132) и наиболее низкие при "ошибках восприятия общения" (2,315). Что касается конфликтов, то наивысшая оценка давалась "несправедливым отношениям" (3,630) и наинизшая была связана с ролью "несогласия" (1,888). В категории удовлетворенности работой наивысшим баллом оценивались "взаимоотношения с сотрудниками" (3,215) и наиболее низким - "уровень заработной платы" (1,928). Корреляция между общением и конфликтами не была достоверной, но между удовлетворенностью работой и общением, а также между конфликтами и удовлетворением работой была отрицательной. Библ. 28

Аннотация: Опрошено и обследовано 50 медицинских сестер отделений гемодиализа, где диализаторы подвергаются стерилизации формальдегидом (I; 1-я гр.). 2-ю гр. составила 71 медицинская сестра, не имевшая контакта с I. В 1-й гр. значительно чаще встречались такие связанные с воздействием I симптомы, как кожный зуд, головокружение, тошнота, затруднение концентрации внимания, слезотечение, назальные расстройства, кашель, различные формы нарушения дыхания. Выявлена позитивная корреляция между наличием этих клинических признаков и конц-ией I в воздухе. В 1-й гр. содержание лейкоцитов в периферической крови было достоверно снижено по сравнению с таковым во 2-й гр., что позволяет сделать вывод, что снижение кол-ва лейкоцитов является биологическим маркером воздействия I.
