Аннотация: The subjects were 504 adult primary care patients from ten London General Practices. They were assessed prior to consultation on mood state (HADS), health locus of control, health value, coping style (MBSS) and expectations (Patient's Intentions Questionnaire, PIQ). Consultations were audio-taped and patient satisfaction (MISS, VSQ) was assessed. Factor analysis of the PIQ items revealed three components: "Explanation and understanding", "Support" and "Tests and Diagnosis" which are consistent with Salmon and Quine (1993) findings. The higher the patients' anxiety, the higher the desire for support (p) and explanation and understanding (p). The higher the patients' depressed mood, the higher the desire for support (p). Perceived control was also significantly associated with patient expectations. Input and process variables were found to be predictive of patient satisfaction. The results are discussed in the light of existing models of doctor-patient communication
